How to Make these Burger Bowls

This recipe can be broken down into three main stages:

  1. Make the hamburger meat (about 20-25 minutes).
    • Cook onions for about 8-10 minutes until translucent.
    • Add the beef and cook about 5 minutes until almost fully browned.
    • Add all the flavourings called for and cook about 5-10 minutes until the liquids have evaporated and have absorbed into the meat.
  2. Make the special sauce.
    • This can be done while the beef is cooking.
    • Simply add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and mix together.
    • As always I encourage you to taste and season as you see fit.
  3. Assemble the burger bowls.
    • Again, you can prepare your bowls as your beef cooks.
    • This is simply a matter of slicing, dicing and preparing your salad ingredients and toppings.

Besides the beef and the special sauce, what’s makes up the salad bowl?

  • Romain Lettuce
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Sliced Avocado
  • Red Onion
  • Pickles

If there are any burger bowl additions that you’re not crazy about – just skip them! The great things about these bowls is that you can very easily customise each bowl based on what you like.

Possible Additions

  • Sautéed mushrooms – add sliced mushrooms to the onions before adding the beef.
  • Bacon – Add some crumbled up bacon to your bowls. You can even cook the onions in the leftover bacon grease for an even more bacon-infused flavour
  • Cheese – Turn your burger bowl into a cheeseburger bowl! You can’t go wrong with cheddar, jack or Swiss cheese. I, personally, don’t think you can ever go wrong with a burger topped with blue cheese.
  • Guacamole – When is it ever a bad time to add guac? The answer is NEVER.

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 lb | 450 g lean beef mince
  • 1/4 cup |60 ml beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons |30 ml gluten free Worcestershire sauce or Henderson’s (UK)

  • 1 tablespoon |15 ml gluten free tamari/soy sauce or Coconut Aminos for paleo/soy free option
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • more salt to taste

Special Sauce

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons 10 ml pickle juice
  • 2 tablespoons pickles, finely diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon | 15 ml water

Salad Bowl

  • 2 small/medium head romaine lettuce, chopped
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 ripe avocados, pitted and sliced
  • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup pickles, sliced

Instructions

Hamburger Meat

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet or pan over a medium heat. Add the diced onions and 1/4 teaspoon salt and sauté for 7-10 minutes until soft and translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook until almost completely browned, about 5 minutes. If the pan is looking dry feel free to add more oil as needed. Use a wooden spoon to break up the meat.
  3. Turn the heat up high and add the beef stock, Worcester (or Henderson’s) and mustard, soy sauce (or coconut aminos), sugar, garlic powder and black pepper. Cook until the liquids have evaporated and the beef looks like it’s starting to caramelise and look slightly crispy around the edges. Turn off the heat and remove the pan from the burner. Set aside until you’re ready to construct your burger bowls.

Special Sauce

  1. Add all of the special sauce ingredients to a small bowl and mix everything together until combined. Taste and season with more salt as needed.

Assembly

  1. Divide the chopped lettuce between four bowls. Add sliced onions, avocado, cherry tomatoes and pickles (or just add your preferred burger toppings). Top with beef mince and drizzle special sauce over the bowls and enjoy.

Notes

How to Make this Paleo?

  • Worcestershire Sauce isn’t necessarily strictly paleo as it often contains a bit of molasses so keep that in mind if you need to follow the Paleo diet to a T. That being said there are plenty of DIY paleo Worcestershire sauce recipes that you can make if you’re up for it.
  • Instead of sugar, you can skip it, or add 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup instead.
