Instructions
Cut in 1/2 cup cold butter and 1/2 cup shortening with a pastry blender or two forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a large bowl, whisk together 5 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tbsp baking powder, 1 tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp salt.
In a small bowl, dissolve 2 tsp yeast in 1/4 cup warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
Add the yeast mixture and 2 cups buttermilk to the flour mixture. Stir until the dough comes together.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently 3 to 4 times.
Roll the dough to 1-inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter.
Place biscuits on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
